A couple of months ago, I was sitting at a bar minding my own business when the woman next to me did something strange.
Surrounded by potential partners, she pulled out her phone, hid it coyly beneath the counter, and opened the online dating app Tinder.
Instead of interacting with the people around her, she chose to search for a companion elsewhere online.
I wondered to myself, is this what online dating has done to us?
This can be especially beneficial for people who don’t have a large social circle.
In addition to the sheer number of people you can meet, many sites provide an avenue for meeting like-minded people. Unlike other social venues, on an online dating site, you can be fairly certain that everyone you meet is single and looking.
(Though, in that respect, I guess I do have e Harmony and Match to thank for my writing career.) Armed with years of slow-churned cynicism, I took to the internet to see if others shared my experiences.
Online dating sites love to boast about the millions of members they have.
But as it turns out, they’re heaving shovelfuls of statistical manure at you.
What I uncovered were some harsh realities about online dating that no one ever talks about.
After the jump, some things you might not have known… Most of the member profiles you’ll find are inactive.
